Merry Christmas, Happy Jason’s Birthday, Happy New Year, and all that jazz. It’s been a long and eventful past few weeks with my sister being in town, which is why I haven’t been writing as of late. It’s the first time I’ve spent any significant time with my sister in over 3 years, so it seemed kinda important to just spend as much quality time as possible.

Highlights include making an outrageously gaudy cake for my birthday, eating food that is undoubtedly bad for me, and–best of all–TRAIN MUSEUM!!!!!!

If you can’t identify what’s absolutely awesome about train museums, then I feel bad for you. This also means that I apparently feel bad for about 90% of the world, since I can’t imagine a lot of people are thrilled by train museums. But hey, that’s your loss.

It goes without saying that there was a lot that happened and I have lots to pontificate and ramble on about, but we’ll do that later. Right now, I wanna talk about the events of today. I want to talk about my good ol’ buddy, The Financial Planner!

After having put him off for nearly a month (he’s persistent; I’ll give him that), I finally gave in for a “Financial Advisory Meeting” during my lunch break. I, unfortunately, am endlessly curious and have little else to do during that time, so I figured I’d give it a shot and see what the big sell is.

Let’s see how it went, shall we?

You know you’re a service. Services have fees (hey, my services cost people money and that’s how I get paid). The more you avoid the concept of an associated cost, the less I like what I’m hearing. It’s just downright shifty. Furthermore, he avoided ever actually answering any questions. You’ll help me set up an account, you say? Well, what exactly is an account, why do I want one, and what does it do for me? Oh.. there are “many types” of accounts. Well thank god you cleared that one up for me! There’s also the incredibly alarming issue of when a ‘financial advisor’ is asking you how much they can expect you to pay, flat rate, per month. Worse is when they ask how much money you’d like to make in returns on your investment. Listen, if you could choose how much money you make in returns, I’m pretty sure we’d all be rich.

Last but not least in the “Please, dear god, never talk to me again” coffin? The magical words ‘Off Shore Bank Account’. I don’t believe I’ve ever heard those words in relation to something not seedy. There’s typically a pretty good reason why we’re not using normal banks. You know, the ones that us average people use. Those same ones that are regulated (and protected) by governments.

That’s not to say that these guys are up to anything bad. In fact, I’m pretty sure that they’re entirely on the up and up. It’s just that I don’t exactly anyone who wants to sell me something. Furthermore, I’m incredibly suspicious of people who want to sell you something when they won’t tell you the cost. When you’re telling me it’s “Really just best if you set up an automatic monthly withdrawal from your credit card”, it sounds to me like you’re really rather I not know how much you’re charging me.

So now that I’ve gotten up on my soap box and complained about all the ways I don’t think you’ll get rich, mayhaps I should step forward and actually give some advice. How does Jason! think think you can get rich?

By selling Financial Advising services to someone, of course.

[6,3,8
