Blah, tired. Not so much of a ‘sleepy’ kind of tired, either. It’s more of the ‘Focus and concentration is completely shot, so I stare off into space’ variety. Working in a law firm seems to be like that: Long periods of time waiting for something to happen mixed with bursts filled with ridiculous amounts of work. You’ve got 3 hours worth of projects to do, and 1 hour to do them all because the court will be closing for business. Needless to say, your 1 hour deadline will be filled with phone calls and e-mails from people wanting updates. This definitely differs from teaching English in Japan in that there your job is mostly to listen and engage in conversation. The best way I can express to people the need for attention to detail in this job is by pointing out one random fact: Did you know that there are italicized commas and periods, and that they look different? I didn’t, and now I’m charged with finding them.

Fortunately, I rather like my job and working in general. It is, however, not for the faint of heart (or who don’t care for lots of stress). On the positive side, the coffee is delicious.

Now, I bet you thought that I forgot to document all my pointless junk mail. Of course not! Here we move into…

There was also a phone bill, but I figured that’s of little interest to you (even if I would consider it ‘junk’, since I really am not terribly excited about receiving phone bills) and is mostly just text. It would also show that I hardly ever call people, so I’d rather not post that online. It’s much cooler to pretend that I’m a socialite who’s spending my evenings in with the social elite, planning our next mountain-climbing trip across Europe. Then again, I’m taking photographs and talking at length about the junk that shows up in my mailbox on a daily basis, so I’m pretty sure it’s not too hard for you guys to figure out that I’m not terribly busy.

So, what do we have? (Clockwise from the upper-left) Well, we’ve got a notice about my gas meter (letting me know that.. I… have a gas meter? And that they explode if they leak gas and I smoke next to them?), another advertisement on a place to get rid of all my junk at (this one is for throwing stuff away rather than storage), something about newspaper subscriptions, and a woman with long hair who wants to look like a woman with short hair. That’s fortuitous for her because she’s starring on a beauty-salon advertisement! The top two are boring, so we’ll skip to the good parts.

I'm glad I don't care about cheap haircuts...

The first thing you’ll notice is that haircuts are apparently expensive. Like, really expensive. The red prices are their ‘campaign’ prices and black ones are the normal rate. I couldn’t imagine giving anyone $260 to to do anything to my hair, unless they were going to plate it in gold. I might do it if I could have literal ‘gold(ie) locks’, but that’s another story for another time. But that’s not really what catches my eye–it’s the services they advertise:

Cut

Digital Perm

Ion Hair Straightening

Cream Bath

Just look at that last one and tell me you’re not curious (and slightly horrified).

Just what I need!

Finally, we have the newspaper subscription advertisement. It’s all the standard sell–how you can lock in at the right price, use the internet service, etc–and pretty boring. But inside, they show me the wonderful present I can have–if only I sign up! It’s a first aid kit for all your emergency needs, including bandages (good), safety gloves (nice), masks for a common cold (..huh?), and a variety of other things. On one hand, it’s topical and something people could use. On the other, I find it tasteless that they’re trying to cash in on the earthquake that occurred last year. But hey, that’s business, right?

And that, kiddies, brings our adventure through the junk that ends up in my mail box to an end for today. We’ll be back tomorrow for some more fun, taking a look at [????] and [????].
