I know being thrifty is important, and that we can’t overlook small expenses.

However! I have to say I was a little surprised to see this sign at the 7-Eleven near where I live. I mean, it’s not just one thousand and sixty yen per hour to work the overnight shift (10p to 8a), oh no. You will be paid a whole one thousand sixty THREE yen an hour. Now that’s an entirely different story.

Sure, it’s just a really minor point and I can’t really complain that they’re paying more (?) than other places, but it just reminds me of when I had to pay back my student loans (fortunately, I didn’t owe much and already have paid back everything). After graduating from university, I owed $9,987. At this point, you might as well just charge me the extra $13 and we can just agree that it’s $10,000. It’s not that I really want to pay more than I have to, but it just seems silly when you see such a big deal over such a minor difference.

On the other hand, it means that I can tell people that it cost me “less than $10,000 to finish my education”, so I guess I’m okay with it.

Since the beginning of the new year, work’s been busy (like, really busy), so I haven’t really had much time to do much outside of working, reading, and sleeping. as many of you may know, I’ve loved reading books, novels, magazines, newspapers, and just about anything (including travel pamphlets, for some odd reason) since the age of 12, so it’s one of the last things I’m willing to give up, no matter how little time I may have. Also–and this is something a lot of people may not know–I stopped reading English books about a year and a half ago. Whenever possible, I try to take in all my newspapers, magazines, and books in Japanese now. It’s much slower to read a novel in English than in Japanese as a non-native speaker, but it does help a lot of building vocabulary, and gives you insight on creative use of language.

The only problem, alas, is that most of the books I read are murder/mystery detective novels. Unless I plan on being wrapped up in a homicide investigation or recreating the Scooby Doo gang in Japan, I don’t think all that vocabulary’s going to be useful.

All that aside… wow. We’re already 3 weeks into the new year. Where does time go? It just flies by.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to work out and then get ready for another awesome week starting tomorrow. And all you stateside need to relax and enjoy your three day weekend (thanks Mr. King!).

If anyone needs a job at 7-Eleven as an overnight cashier, just let me know!
