More than anything, I’d like to have my life so settled and simple that I can easily tell you what I’ll be doing tomorrow and for the week after that. But this falls in the same category of “unbelievable but totally true facts about Jason” as the whole silly that I’m actually quite shy and keep to myself. Just because I spend all day every day aggressively high fiving literally hundreds of students and making myself the center of attention doesn’t mean it’s who I am by nature. It just happens to be an important part of my job.

But I digress. We’re talking about my oddly dysfunctional life today. Yay!

For anyone who’s known me for a long time, or to whom I’ve told personal details of my life, it becomes rapidly apparent that my life’s been a bit on the “odd” side. As the years pass, a lot of these stories can be quite amusing, but that doesn’t change the fact that no matter where I go in the world, what friends I try to keep, or what life I try to lead, I always end up in strange situations. Pregnancy tests in university libraries, sleepiness in Korean churches, parties where all the other attendees are suddenly pants less… These are just some of the exciting stories I generally opt to not discuss in polite conversation, but are pretty representative of the odd situations I somehow stumble into. Here’s the latest!

So, I’ve been seeing this woman for a few weeks now. Gone out to dinner, watched movies, stayed up until past midnight talking and doing crossword puzzles, etc. At one point she asked if we were dating and, after thinking it over, I figured we might as well give it a shot. I know she’s really religious, of the type who wakes up and prays with her family at 6am everyday, and goes to 7 hour services on Sunday. Despite my asking, she doesn’t talk about her religion and won’t even say the name, but from what I’ve gotten from my students, it doesn’t really have a good reputation (the word “cult” has come up more than once). Hmmmm….

Fast forward to this Monday, and Jason has come down with a bad cold (had a headache, fever, and general unwellness for 4 days. Of course I didn’t go to thie hospital, though I have insurance. That’s just silly). She comes over with some yoghurt, soup, and other stuff to keep me company since I had to call in sick to work. While I’m slowly going delusional with a fever, she starts talking about her church. Like, that every member of her family (all 8 of them) works for the church. Huh. She then mentions that in her religion, the church actually arranges marriages for their members. And this isn’t a “service” they do. It’s a required part of the religion. Unmatched young men and women must submit applications like a resume and then the church will find someone across Japan and pair them up. Then the two get married. Fascinating as this is, I’m not quite sure I follow at this point.

She then tells me that she’s also submitted an application a few months back.

Which brings me to the incredibly confusing question of “Why in god’s name are you at my house right now?”

I still haven’t gotten a satisfactory answer to this situation yet, but yet again my life is oddly complicated. I predict it will get only more awesome, though, as I just got an email this morning telling me that we “need to make some serious decisions today”. I’m guessing I either need to join the church (not gonna happen) or commit to getting married someday (also not gonna happen at this rate). Either way, it’s gonna be a pretty exciting evening. Don’t be jealous.

On one hand, at least my life is always exciting. On the other… There’s nothing wrong with boring.

I want boring.

Most people don’t believe me when I tell them, but my greatest hope for life is to finally have a boring life.
