I taught at a high school this morning, and in an hour I’ll be teaching 5 year olds at a kindergarten. Then we’ll teach two classes for elementary school kids, and then a private lesson at someone’s house with a high school boy. Not so bad, and the variety’s nice. In a given week, I typically teach roughly 300+ students from 3-82 years old in conversation, reading, and business classes.

The job’s a lot of fun, and the good point is that you get to talk to and meet a lot of people. Eve day I see a different person and talk about what’s going on in their life and often get to hear about something new. In the kindergarten class today, we’ll be making mother’s day cards for their mothers and doing some other crafts. Can’t really complain too much.

The down side, though, is that by virtue of being foreign in Japan and having so many students, your privacy is pretty much non-existent. If I don’t meet one of my students, I’ll at least see one of their parents, or someone who knows someone who is a student of mine. This isn’t so bad, except when you have students ask you in class “Hey Jason.. Who was the woman you went to the movie theater with on Sunday?” Another favorite of mine is that the staff at the drug store know me. It’s nice, and they’re really friendly, but it makes shopping awkward when you know the person. “Yes, I’d like duct tape, a bag of kitty litter, and a dog collar please!”

Yeah.. That’d go over well.

I’m thinking I’m going to buy a fake mustache to wear on the weekends. It might work… Maybe?

Anyway, not much planned for my vacation (need to study, unfortunately. Blaaaaaaaaaah), but I am throwing a taco party on Friday. I’m well aware that Cinco de Mayo is coming up, but I don’t really care and have no desire to wait for my tacos. So we will eat tacos (and refried beans, Mexican rice, guacamole, etc) on Friday. The only question is: What movie does one watch at such an event? Somehow, I’m feeling Star Wars isn’t gonna cut it…

I should actually get back to work. But before I go, I wanted to mention that the gallery is finally up!
